// docs/mysql-tray-controller
A native Windows tray app for MySQL and MariaDB — configuration and what the status icons mean.
On first launch, MySQL Tray Controller checks for a Windows service named MySQL84, MySQL80, MySQL, MariaDB, mariadb, wampmysqld64, or wampmariadb64, in that order, and watches the first one it finds. If none exist, it defaults to MySQL84.
To point it at a different service, edit the config file it creates here:
%APPDATA%\MySQLTrayController\config.ini
service_name=MySQL84
refresh_interval_seconds=2
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| service_name | The Windows service name (not its display label) — find it in services.msc → your MySQL service → Properties → Service name. |
| refresh_interval_seconds | How often the tray icon polls the service status. |
After editing the file, open the tray menu and choose Reload configuration — no restart needed.
Errors are logged to:
%APPDATA%\MySQLTrayController\error.log
Left-click or right-click the tray icon to open the menu, then choose Running, Stopped, or Restart MySQL. Windows only shows a UAC prompt for the moment the service state actually changes — the tray app itself never runs elevated.
| Icon color | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | The service is running |
| Red | The service is stopped |
| Amber | Starting, stopping, or otherwise changing state |
| Blue | The service is paused |
| Gray | Not found, or its status couldn't be read |
The tray menu also has an optional startup with Windows toggle — turn it on and the controller launches automatically at sign-in.
